BETWEEN THE LINES

My heroines don't wait in towers, hoping someone will come to their rescue. By the time I write The End, I've usually spent months—sometimes years—living alongside those characters. I know their favorite coffee order, the songs they'd secretly play when no one else was listening, the memories that shaped them long before chapter one, and the conversations that happened long after the final page.

Although my books are works of fiction, the worlds they inhabit are grounded in research. Characters appear long before their own stories begin. Someone walks onto the page for a single scene, says a handful of words, then quietly settles into the back of my mind. Before I know it, they're refusing to stay in the background. That's simply how my brain works.
